Iconic WWE Heel Admits They Never Wanted To Turn Babyface
A famous WWE Heel had no desire to be a babyface.
Although he’d had several runs as a singles star since signing with WWE in 1995, JBL was known as something of a tag team specialist during the majority of his time with the company.
However, that all changed in early 2004 when he split from Faarooq for the final time, bringing an end to the APA. With his former tag team partner now out of the picture and retired, Bradshaw reinvented himself as a suit-wearing millionaire businessman-come-politician, and more importantly, as a hated heel.
Over the following four and a half years, JBL won the United States Championship, Intercontinental Championship, and the World Championship. A series of feats that appeared highly unlikely when he was part of the New Blackjacks in 1997.
JBL Loved Life As A WWE Villain
On the latest edition of Something To Wrestle, JBL was asked whether his famous heel persona could have worked as a babyface. The WWE Hall of Famer said that it could have, and quite easily, but he wanted to remain a heel.
“He could have been a face easily I believe. No doubt about it. We had to work very hard to keep it heel at one point.
Vince would give me all kinds of advice and a lot of times he would sit there and he’d tell me before I went out for a promo, ‘Do not be entertaining. Just be a heel.’
Because there was a chance of the crowd starting to change. If you’re entertaining for too long, any old heel becomes a babyface.
I think JBL could have been a babyface very easy. We had to be very careful for him not to be. I never wanted to be a babyface.”
On a different recent episode, JBL claimed that Vince McMahon is working on a new book. According to the veteran, McMahon will be holding nothing back as he tells the story of his controversial career in his own words.
