A beloved WWE veteran is close to an in-ring return.

Rey Mysterio was pulled from WrestleMania 41 at the 11th hour after suffering a significant injury. Although Mysterio initially wanted to wrestle anyway, doctors made it clear that, given the severity of the injury, competing wouldn’t be wise.

In the weeks after the event, it was reported that Mysterio had suffered a torn groin and had undergone successful surgery.

The WWE Hall of Famer suffered the injury the day before his planned WrestleMania match on SmackDown. Despite not being able to wrestle, Mysterio has remained visible while rehabbing the injury, making regular appearances for AAA.

Rey Mysterio Closing On WWE Return

A new report via Wrestle Votes Radio has now confirmed that Mysterio is progressing well as he works his way back to full fitness. Not only that, he’s expected to play a “major role” with AAA when he does get back in the ring.

The report added that another AAA could be held before the end of the year, likely around Survivor Series.

“We are told those in WWE want to feature Rey Mysterio in a major role as part of this new, ongoing AAA rollout once he’s back healthy and in action. Mysterio, who underwent surgery back in April, is said to be progressing well.

In addition, this is kind of a two-for-one here, sources indicate WWE is considering at least one more AAA streaming event before the end of the year, with speculation pointing to Survivor Series weekend in San Diego now.”

Back in August, Dominik Mysterio said he was desperate to compete at Survivor Series because it’s being held in his hometown of San Diego. The new AAA Mega Champion added that he’d love to be part of a traditional Survivor Series elimination match, having never wrestled in one before.

At Worlds Collide on September 12, Dominik Mysterio beat El Hijo del Vikingo in the main event to become the Mega Champion. In doing so, he became the first Mysterio to win AAA’s top prize, despite Rey starring for the promotion in the 1990s.

It had previously been reported that WWE was looking to make Dominik the face of AAA moving forward.
