WWE Hall Of Famer The Godfather Reveals Origins Of His Memorable Character
In a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, WWE Hall of Famer Charles Wright shared the fascinating backstory of his legendary Attitude Era persona, “The Godfather.” Wright, who also portrayed characters like “Papa Shango” and “Kama Mustafa,” offered insights into the creation and enduring popularity of the character that defined his career.
The inception of “The Godfather” came from an unexpected source – Wright’s wife. Initially aiming to portray a “mean pimp,” Wright received pivotal advice from his spouse. She encouraged him to embrace his authentic self.
Instead of trying to act to be something that you’re not, just go out there and be your high-ass crazy, have a good time self at this point of your life.
This guidance led Wright to develop a more genuine and entertaining portrayal that struck a chord with WWE audiences for years.
Wright’s approach to the character prioritised entertainment over wrestling techniques. Despite advice from fellow WWE legend The Undertaker to adopt a more serious demeanour, Wright chose to maintain his jovial persona.
I’m like ‘You know, I’m-a roll the way I’m going, bro, because I’m enjoying myself, I’m making money, I got my businesses at home, I’m cool, I’m going out as The Godfather.’
The character’s debut was a result of improvisation during a poorly received match with Bradshaw at a house show. Wright’s spontaneous introduction as a pimp and mention of his “hoes” unexpectedly resonated with the audience. This caught the attention of WWE CEO Vince McMahon, who encouraged Wright to develop the character further.
Vince heard about it and so when we went to TV, he says ‘Charles? Whatever you’re doing, I heard it might have legs’.
“The Godfather” went on to become one of the most memorable characters of the Attitude Era, culminating in Wright’s induction into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2016. However, Wright acknowledges that the character’s controversial themes might face challenges in today’s more sensitive WWE environment.
The Godfather, in this form, would not last long in these times. He would offend too many people.
Despite potential controversies, “The Godfather” remains a beloved figure in WWE history. The character’s success is a testament to Wright’s ability to connect with audiences through authenticity and entertainment. His journey from a failed concept to an iconic persona underscores the unpredictable nature of character development in professional wrestling.
