WWE Hall Of Famer Names Matches Steve Austin Hated

Steve Austin

Stone Cold Steve Austin was determined to keep his spot as WWE’s top man.

Steve Austin might be one of the biggest stars WWE and the wrestling industry as a whole has ever seen, but his journey to legendary status was far from straightforward.

The rugged Texan began his career in 1989 before arriving in WCW as “Stunning” Steve Austin two years later. The star enjoyed a solid start to life with the company but it wasn’t until he was partnered with Brian Pillman as part of the Hollywood Blonds that his career kicked into a new gear. However, despite that impressive run and a United States Title win, Austin was fired in September 1995.

Austin then landed in the WWF via a short stop in ECW. Even then he was forced to endure life as The Ringmaster before finally forcing his way into the main event and superstardom.

Steve Austin Demanded Singles Matches

After struggling so hard to make it to the top, Austin was determined to do everything he could to stay there, and that included making every town possible.

On a recent episode of his Grilling JR podcast, Jim Ross discussed Austin’s rise and incredible impact on WWE. The announcer recalled Austin working to appear on the house show circuit as often as he could, although he made sure those appearances would be in singles matches.

“The house show business, as we called it back then, now Live Events, nobody could touch him because he wanted to make all the towns, no matter if it was El Paso in a small building or Houston at the Coliseum, he wanted to be on every card, and he demanded that I book him in singles.”

Ross added that Austin would get angry at being booked in tag team matches — even though it was done to protect him. However, he’d usually get his way and put into singles action.

“Every now and then, Vince would say, ‘We need to take care of Steve. Put him in a tag this weekend on his next run’, and I would say, ‘Vince, he doesn’t want to be in tags. It makes him angry to be booked in tags, so unless you order me to do it, when we get to the arena, he’s going to not want to work because he’s a singles guy. He’s worked all his life to be a singles Main Event star, and that’s the only thing that’s going to make him happy.’

So, Vince would always relent. Anybody that can remember Stone Cold in a house show tag team match, raise your hand. There weren’t many of them.”

Meanwhile, Steve Austin has been linked with a return to WWE on the January 6th edition of Raw when the show premieres on Netflix.
