WWE Hall Of Famer Slams WrestleMania 11 Main Event Decision
WWE Hall of Famer Ted DiBiase has criticised a key decision from WrestleMania 11, calling the event’s main event booking a major mistake.
Speaking on his podcast, Everybody’s Got a Pod, DiBiase reflected on the 1995 spectacle where NFL superstar Lawrence Taylor faced Bam Bam Bigelow in the headline match. According to DiBiase, ending the show with a celebrity bout undermined professional wrestling’s credibility.
“I think it was a mistake; I do,” DiBiase said. “You’re paying a guy very well to come and be a part of what you’re doing, and obviously his name is so big in the NFL that it’s almost like admitting that the NFL carries more weight than professional wrestling.”
DiBiase insisted that Taylor’s match should not have closed the event, suggesting it would have been better positioned earlier on the card. In his view, the night should have culminated with a traditional wrestling contest for the WWE Championship.
“I would have put them next to last and let the main event be the championship match,” he explained.
At WrestleMania 11, the WWF title match between Diesel and Shawn Michaels took place before Taylor’s bout against Bigelow. Although Taylor’s performance drew praise considering his limited wrestling background, critics such as DiBiase argue that the decision to place the celebrity match last diminished the prestige of the championship and sent the wrong message about the company’s priorities.
Whilst WrestleMania has almost always had celebrity involvement, with some celebrities being involved in matches on the card, no other celebrity besides Taylor has ever main-evented on one of the shows.
Which WWE Hall Of Famer Said That Lawrence Taylor Was The Best Celebrity Turned Wrestler?
WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash spoke about who was the best celebrity turned wrestler and was very quick to name Lawerence Taylor. Nash echoed the sentiments of other industry insiders that Taylor was one of the best celebrities to adapt to the world of professional wrestling and was very impressed with his performance in the main event of WrestleMania 11 despite his limited experience.
