WWE Hall Of Famer Shares His First Memories Of Yokozuna

WWE legend The Undertaker recently shared his memories of first meeting the late WWE Hall of Famer Yokozuna on his “Six Feet Under” podcast.

The Deadman revealed he immediately recognized Yokozuna’s potential following his debut in a dark match at a WWE TV taping in September 1992.

I remember going up to him after his dark match and singing his praises and telling him what a great job he had done, and that one day that me and him were going to make a lot of money together.

The Phenom’s admiration for Yokozuna stemmed from footage he had seen of the Samoan wrestler performing in Japan under the name Kokina Maximus in years prior

I had seen footage of him in Japan as Kokina Maximus and was just like ‘ooh this dude.. this guy’s awesome!’ He’s a cat at 400 pounds. He could do things that your eyes and brain could not process. There’s no way a guy that big can move like that, and he was so special man.

This encounter marked the beginning of a friendship between the two wrestlers. The Undertaker revealed he was eager to work with Yokozuna in the newcomer’s first major program.

From the get-go we hit it off and were friends immediately. I begged Vince (that I wanted) to work with him first. But it was still special and we still did well. I think if we could have gone straight out of the gates with it, man it would have been awesome.

Yokozuna quickly rose to prominence, becoming WWE Champion less than six months after his television debut. The two future Hall of Famers would go on to engage in a significant feud from 1993 to 1994, featuring several pay-per-view matches. Their rivalry included memorable casket matches at the Royal Rumble and Survivor Series events in 1994, which became major highlights of both shows.

The Undertaker’s recollections offer a unique insight into the early career of Yokozuna and the mutual respect between these two WWE legends.
