WWE Hall Of Famer Sean Waltman Reveals The Risks Behind DX’s WCW Invasion

WWE Hall Of Famer Sean Waltman Reveals The Risks Behind DX's WCW Invasion

WWE Hall of Famer Sean Waltman, famously known as X-Pac, reflected on D-Generation X’s legendary 1998 “invasion” of WCW Monday Nitro.

Speaking on the WWE Vault, Sean Waltman recounted how DX, led by Triple H, took their rivalry with WCW to unprecedented levels by showing up at the Norfolk Scope Arena, where WCW was hosting Nitro. The group arrived in a modified military-style truck, complete with a mock gun, and donned army uniforms while using a megaphone to taunt WCW personnel and fans.

“It was unheard of that we did that; it was just crazy. No one would have ever thought we had the balls to do that. My whole idea was like, ‘We gotta get in the building.’”

Waltman recalled, underscoring the audacity of the stunt. Their bold plan to infiltrate the arena was quickly halted when WCW security closed the vehicle entry gates, denying them access. Despite this, the invasion left a lasting impression on wrestling history. Waltman also noted the potential risks they faced by antagonising the only other major wrestling promotion at the time.

“WCW was the only other buyer in the wrestler’s market. It would be kind of burning a bridge, right? At least, that’s what the concern was, and none of us cared.”

During the chaos, DX experienced an unexpected twist. As they staged their invasion outside, they encountered Dick Cheatham, Vice President of Turner Broadcasting, who surprised them with his reaction.

“All of a sudden, we hear, ‘DX, I love you guys.’ And it’s Dick Cheatham.”

Waltman revealed, adding that Cheatham even offered them all-access passes to the event.
