WWE Hall Of Famer Says Backstage Politics Were The Reason For Hulk Hogan’s 2005 Departure
WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has revealed that backstage politics played a key role in bringing Hulk Hogan’s 2005 WWE run to an end.
Despite high-profile feuds with Muhammad Hassan, Khosrow Daivari, Carlito, Kurt Angle, and Shawn Michaels, tensions behind the scenes ultimately cut Hulk Hogan’s comeback short. Speaking on his Grilling JR podcast, Jim Ross explained that Hogan’s presence created unease among some members of the locker room, who felt they were being overshadowed by the legendary performer.
“It’s backstage politics; he got old, and enough was enough in that respect,” Ross said. “Communication was not good, and a lot of the talents felt like they were being sacrificed at Hogan’s expense. So, I don’t know; it was just an uneasy arrangement, but the way he was being booked and helping some of the talents was a good thing.”
While some wrestlers were reportedly unhappy with how Hogan was positioned, Ross acknowledged that his involvement in storylines did benefit younger stars at the time. Despite the challenges, Hogan’s presence continued to draw attention and generate interest in WWE programming.
Although his 2005 run ended sooner than expected, Hogan made one final in-ring appearance for WWE the following year. At SummerSlam 2006, he took on Randy Orton in the midst of Orton’s “Legend Killer” storyline, securing a victory in what would be his last WWE match.
