A former WWE star would have liked a retirement match, but their body had other plans.

Mark Henry hasn’t wrestled since taking part in WWE’s Greatest Royal Rumble back in 2018. However, that wasn’t originally the plan. For years, Henry said he was open to wrestling again, even if it wasn’t something he was openly pursuing.

When the former World Champion left the sports entertainment giant for AEW in 2021, it seemed he might get his swansong, but things didn’t play out that way.

On May 27th, Mark Henry announced he was leaving AEW to focus on other projects, seemingly closing the door on wrestling again, given his age and injury record. Although the star did confirm he wasn’t leaving the industry entirely.

During an interview with Chris Van Vliet, Henry admitted he would have liked a retirement match, but his body wouldn’t allow it.

“Yeah, my body said, ‘Man, f*ck your plan!’ My back gave out. It just never allowed me [to compete] and I can probably have surgery. I keep putting it off because I just want to keep moving around. But eventually, I’m gonna have to just get it fixed.”

Mark Henry Missed Out On WWE Title Run

While speaking on Busted Open Radio, the veteran reflected on his fake retirement in 2013, which saw him eventually challenge John Cena for the World Championship. Mark Henry said he was originally planning on retiring from WWE altogether but was talked into continuing.

Henry added that he doesn’t regret not beating Cena for the WWE Championship as his body couldn’t have handled another World Title run.
