WWE Hall Of Famer Recalls Their Reaction To Being In A Potentially Dangerous Match
WWE Hall of Famer Kane shared a vivid memory of his and The Undertaker’s reaction upon learning they would be part of the first-ever Inferno Match.
Speaking on The Undertaker’s podcast “Six Feet Under,” Kane reflected on their surprise and apprehension about the concept. The match, which took place at the 1998 Unforgiven pay-per-view, was an intense bout where the ring was surrounded by flames, introducing a new level of danger.
We both went ‘What? You’re gonna put us in a barbecue pit?’ We both were like ‘What in the world are you talking about?’
Kane recalled, highlighting their shock at the idea. The Inferno Match was unlike anything seen before, with fire encircling the ring, adding a significant physical and psychological challenge. Kane admitted that his initial concerns revolved around the safety risks.
All I could think of was ‘What happens if someone’s foot gets caught in the rope and they go down and that’s a really bad day.’
He said, expressing the potential hazards of being surrounded by flames during the match. He further elaborated on the elevated risk the match posed, saying:
Anytime you get in the ring, obviously, there’s a level of danger just because even the most simple move you can get hurt on. But we’re talking about putting basically a grate with fire around the ring and now you have to do all this stuff?
Despite their initial worries, Kane and The Undertaker went on to deliver a memorable performance, cementing the Inferno Match as an iconic moment in WWE history.
