WWE Hall Of Famer Jake Roberts On Why It’s Better To Be A Heel
WWE Hall of Famer Jake Roberts who is celebrated for his masterful storytelling and psychological approach, explained why he preferred portraying a heel over a babyface during his storied career.
Speaking on his podcast, The Snake Pit, Jake Roberts highlighted the creative freedom that came with being the bad guy, compared to the limitations of working as a fan favourite.
It kind of corrals you into a certain area that you can only do that.
Roberts said about being a babyface.
You can’t explore different things and different ways of doing things. You got to do what the fans expect of you, and that’s what I didn’t like.
As one of wrestling’s most iconic villains, Roberts was renowned for his sinister promos, cerebral strategies, and the chilling use of his snake, Damien, to intimidate rivals and captivate audiences. Reflecting on his role as a heel, Roberts shared why it suited him so well.
I’m a better heel, yeah, I like being a heel. As the heel, you can explore anything you want to, and you can go any direction you want to. You know, you can try new things, and it’s okay.
This freedom allowed Roberts to craft some of wrestling’s most unforgettable moments, including feuds with legends like Randy Savage and The Ultimate Warrior. His knack for evoking raw emotion from the crowd, whether it was fear, anger, or awe, solidified his reputation as one of the greatest villains in the history of professional wrestling.
Who Did Jake Roberts Credit For His Sobriety?
Jake Roberts credited fellow WWE Hall of Famer Diamond Dallas Page with his sobriety and said that if it wasn’t for the efforts of Page helping him beat his alcohol addiction he believes that he wouldn’t be alive today. Roberts said that today the smell of alcohol makes him feel sick and that he has no fear that he will relapse.
