WWE Hall Of Famer Claims Gunther Is “Placeholder” Champion

Gunther WWE World Heavyweight Champion

According to a WWE Hall of Famer, Gunther has become a placeholder.

After enjoying the longest Intercontinental Title reign in history, Gunther became King of the Ring, and in the process earned a shot at World Title gold.

The formidable Austrian went on to defeat Damian Priest at SummerSlam to claim the World Heavyweight Championship. Since then he’s continued to stand tall on Monday Night Raw, retaining the title with wins over the likes of Randy Orton and Sami Zayn.

However, while fans continue to praise the champion, not everyone has been impressed.

Bully Ray Wants More From Gunther

Speaking on Busted Open Radio, WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray suggested attention has been moved away from the World Heavyweight Title. He said Gunther has essentially become a placeholder, with the title not increasing in importance.

“I don’t think there has been as much attention on that championship now that Gunther has it,” he explained. “I think he has been a good, placeholder. I don’t like the word ‘placeholder’ for him, but I think he’s kept the belt exactly where it was. It hasn’t taken a step back, but I don’t think it has taken a step forward.”

Ray added that the star might need to start acting more dastardly as he’s currently difficult to dislike because he’s so impressive in the ring. Tommy Dreamer agreed, commenting that the champion needs more heat.

“So, if you’re not going to make him a babyface, then he’s got to go for one thing … heat. We need to see him bloody people, choke people out like lifeless, do different things.”

Gunther will be back in action at Saturday Night’s Main Event when he puts the World Heavyweight Championship on the line against Jey Uso.
