WWE Hall Of Famer Eric Bischoff Claims Tony Khan Has An AEW Star “In Prison”
WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff has once again criticised AEW and its president, Tony Khan, this time addressing the ongoing contract issues involving AEW star Rey Fenix.
On his 83 Weeks podcast, Eric Bischoff didn’t hold back, accusing Khan of restricting Fenix’s career opportunities and likening the situation to imprisonment.
Poor Fenix. He’s in ‘Kahn-tanamo Bay.’ He’s in prison and can’t go anywhere. Every time he tries, he’s gonna get his hand slapped.
Bischoff said, using a play on words to reference Guantanamo Bay. The controversy stems from reports that AEW extended Fenix’s contract due to the time he missed while recovering from injuries. While such clauses are not uncommon in wrestling, the decision has reportedly frustrated Fenix, who is said to be interested in leaving AEW to pursue opportunities with WWE.
Adding fuel to the fire, Fenix took to X to criticise AEW, alleging the company ignored his requests for medical treatment and describing their actions as “inhumane.” The posts were quickly deleted, sparking speculation that AEW intervened. Bischoff weighed in on the matter, saying:
The fact that he had to take down his tweets tells me everything that I need to know. He’s got exposure, and this is gonna be a legal situation—it clearly is already—which means it’s only gonna get uglier.
Many believe Fenix’s posts were a calculated move to force AEW’s hand, potentially accelerating his path to free agency.
Why Does Eric Bischoff Think AEW Is A Failure?
Eric Bischoff spoke critically of AEW, Tony Khan and Dave Meltzer and said that the company’s CEO and the wrestling journalist are guilty of overexaggerating the successes of AEW. Bischoff believes that due to AEW’s dwindling viewership numbers for its weekly TV product, the promotion is an “abject f***ing failure.”
