WWE Figure Tells AEW To “Focus On Doing Their Own Thing”
The term “WWE Superstar” is just great branding.
Darby Allin, perhaps inadvertently, recently poured fuel on the AEW vs. WWE fire by claiming the word “Superstar” is a “stupid term.” The word has been used by WWE for decades as a replacement for “wrestlers.”
The comments came after Allin compared WWE to Taylor Swift in an interview back in September.
Despite the star’s subsequent attempts to clarify his comments, and distance himself from what he called “This whole thing with AEW vs. WWE,” the statement hasn’t gone unnoticed.
WWE Announcer Responds To Darby Allin
During a recent episode of his Hall of Fame podcast, Booker T responded to the comments from Allin, and began reasserting that AEW should focus on “doing their own thing.” He added that despite what Allin might think, the term “Superstar” is successful branding.
“‘NXT’ is on fire right now. AEW is doing what they’re doing. I don’t even really want to get off into a whole lot of what AEW is doing, because I say they should just focus on doing their own thing. It’s just like Darby Allin, he made a statement about the WWE Superstar brand, as far as being called a WWE Superstar and that’s a dumb thing…
I think the Superstar tag for me, if I’m a young kid and I love wrestling and I hear the WWE Superstars are coming to town, damn it I’m going to want to be there alright. That’s called branding.”
WWE and AEW most recently went head-to-head on November 6th, with NXT going up against Dynamite. But disappointingly for the Tony Khan-led promotion, it was NXT that again came out on top, pulling in 619,000 viewers, compared to Dynamite’s 523,000 viewers.
WWE’s third brand has now beaten Dynamite in the last three head-to-heads.
