WWE Executive Bruce Prichard Commends Walter Payton’s SummerSlam 1994 Appearance
In a recent episode of his “Something to Wrestle” podcast, WWE Executive Bruce Prichard reminisced about SummerSlam 1994, offering high praise for NFL legend Walter Payton’s involvement in the event.
The show, held in Chicago, featured Payton in Razor Ramon’s corner during his match against Intercontinental Champion Diesel, who was accompanied by Shawn Michaels. Prichard, known for his insider perspective on WWE’s history, was effusive in his praise for Payton’s performance.
I can’t say enough good things about Walter Payton. When the guys were in the back going over their match and they couldn’t remember something, Walter remembered every single spot. Walter was telling the other guys what to do and where to go during that match. That’s how good Walter Payton was.
The WWE executive also lauded Payton’s professionalism and attitude during WWE’s relationship with him.
He was an absolute joy to work with. He was there on time, had a great attitude, and had fun…. He’s at the top of the list as far as people from outside of our world coming into our world and picking it up and having respect for it.
Payton, a Chicago Bears icon and local hero, brought star power to the event that resonated deeply with the Chicago audience. His natural aptitude for the wrestling environment left a lasting impression on WWE staff and performers alike.
Tragically, Payton passed away in 1999 at the age of 46 following a brief illness. However, his memorable appearance at SummerSlam 1994 remains a testament to his versatility and charisma, even outside the football field.
