WWE Discussed Bringing In WCW And TNA Legend

A legendary figure nearly made their way to WWE x AAA Worlds Collide.

At NXT Stand & Deliver, WWE announced that it would be teaming with AAA for an event called Worlds Collide during Money in the Bank weekend. The show then took on extra significance after it was revealed hours later that not only was WWE working with the Mexican Promotion, it now owned it.

With five matches set featuring stars from both promotions, it seems WWE also wanted to add a famous name to the announce desk.

According to a report from Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there were discussions about bringing legendary announcer Mike Tenay. However, it appears he won’t be involved with the show.

“We do know there had been discussion of Mike Tenay regarding announcing the show–he started his announcing career doing When Worlds Collide in 1994… but I can’t confirm if he was contacted. But as best as I can tell, he’s not at this point scheduled to do the show.”

Tenay landed his first announcing job with WCW when the company co-promoted AAA’s When Worlds Collide in November 1994. He remained with WCW until it was acquired by WWE in 2001, spending the intervening years working on Nitro and Thunder.

In 2002, Tenay joined TNA, quickly becoming synonymous with the company and its biggest moments. In 2016, after months of uncertainty, Tenay revealed that he’d amicably left TNA and was effectively retired.

WWE x AAA Worlds Collide – Updated Card

Following his win over Alberto El Patron, known as Alberto Del Rio in WWE, on May 31, El Hiko del Vikingo will defend his newly won AAA Mega Championship against Chad Gable at Worlds Collide.

In the only other match on the card, Ethan Page will defend the NXT North American Championship against Laredo Kid, Je’Von Evans, and Rey Fenix.
