WWE Deal With Music Star Comes As Surprise To Mercedes Mone And AEW

Mercedes Mone was apparently surprised by a deal that WWE made with a top musical act.

It was officially a new era of WWE Smackdown last Friday in Seattle when the blue brand returned to USA Network after a five-year run on Fox.

At the start of the show, WWE fans got to hear a new theme song and video. The song “Neva Play” by Grammy Award-winning artist Megan Thee Stallion featuring RM of BTS was announced as the new theme song of Smackdown.

This isn’t the first time Megan Thee Stallion was associated with WWE because she’s a pro wrestling fan. Bianca Belair was shown hanging out with Megan on an August 2021 episode of Smackdown.

According to PWInsider, there were expectations that Stallion would work with Mone and AEW on some sort of collaboration.

This past February, Mone and Stallion were hanging out together at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards in Japan. That led to discussions between Mike B of Roc Nation and Mone’s manager Keven Undergaro for some sort of deal with AEW. Mone even mentioned the possibility of working with Stallion while promoting AEW All In.

Meanwhile, PWInsider noted that Mone and Stallion talked about working together in WWE in 2021 back when Mercedes Mone was known as Sasha Banks.

How Did Mercedes Mone React To WWE Using Megan Thee Stallion’s Song On SmackDown?

The fact that WWE used Stallion’s “Neva Play” song for Smackdown apparently caught Mercedes Mone and her inner circle by surprise, according to the PWInsider report. They added that whether a Stallion deal with WWE could put an end to Mone working with Stallion in AEW, but remains to be seen.

Former WWE superstar Mojo Rawley, who is a close friend of Banks and part of a company that manages her appearances, commented in the past about how WWE nearly had Stallion appear with Mone at a SummerSlam event several years ago, but it just didn’t happen.
