WWE Criticized For Blake Monroe’s Role In NXT
A wrestling observer has claimed that Blake Monroe is struggling in WWE NXT with a storyline that isn’t particularly strong.
When Blake Monroe worked for AEW under the name Mariah May for two years, she was featured heavily on television. The start of her storyline saw her as an ally of Toni Storm.
After May won the Women’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament to earn a shot at Storm’s AEW Women’s World Title, May turned heel on her “hero” Storm and eventually became the Women’s World Champion herself. Storm would regain the title, and the feud ended soon after, which led to May’s departure to WWE.
Since debuting in WWE, Blake Monroe started as a babyface ally of Jordynne Grace, and they teamed up to win at the Great American Bash. However, Blake showed her true colors at Evolution and turned on Grace.
When Blake Monroe faced Jordynne Grace at NXT Heatwave, she took advantage of an exposed turnbuckle, sent Grace into it, and finished her off with a DDT. It was Monroe’s first singles win on an NXT PLE.
Dave Meltzer Believes Blake Monroe Isn’t Doing Well In WWE
While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed Blake’s role in WWE, as well as JC Mateo (formerly Jeff Cobb), and Meltzer believes neither of them is performing particularly well as WWE superstars.
“Some people going to WWE is the right move, and Blake Monroe and Jeff Cobb—I’m not so sure about those two. It’s not looking to me when I see how those two have been doing.
I know that Cobb didn’t want to go to AEW, so it’s the only other choice. But, you never know how he would do in AEW because so many guys there. There’s so much talent that some guys are on the bench. But it’s hard for me to believe he would do worse in AEW. And I kind of thought that even going there because a guy with his talent is more suited for AEW.
I actually would have thought Blake’s talent is more suited for WWE and maybe in the long run it will be. But she’s not getting the—she had a great storyline in AEW. And here, they’re trying to give her a great storyline. And it ain’t great, that’s for sure.”
The rivalry with Monroe and Grace is continuing because, on the August 26th episode of NXT, Grace played a role in Monroe losing to Kelani Jordan, so it appears Monroe won’t be able to move on from Grace just yet.
