WWE Hall Of Famer Feels Cody Rhodes’ WrestleMania Story Has Been Awkward
Cody Rhodes is headed to WrestleMania 40 for a huge main event match, but it has been a bit of a bumpy road along the way.
After Cody Rhodes won the 2024 Royal Rumble for the second year in a row, it appeared as if he was on the obvious path to challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title at WrestleMania 40.
The path changed a bit when Cody told Reigns that he was coming after the title, but not at WrestleMania. That led to The Rock making a surprising appearance for a staredown with Reigns. Fans hated that, so they went on social media to complain about it, they chanted “We Want Cody” and booed any mentions of The Rock.
To WWE’s credit, they listened to the fans and pivoted at the WrestleMania 40 press conference where The Rock turned heel while Cody made it clear he was going to challenge Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40.
While speaking about the Cody Rhodes story on the way to WrestleMania 40, WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff admitted on his Strictly Business podcast that it has been confusing.
“Well, look, it’s been confusing. Let’s just — my reaction, and I have been following that because I’m fascinated by it from an actual storytelling perspective, and not a cosplay story. It’s been confusing, and I think there was one plan, they executed that plan. Cody handed off his opportunity to Rock. There was a reaction to that, and then there was a reaction to the reaction. And here we are today.”
“So I think that bobble that took place when Cody handed off his shot at Roman to Rock? That was a fumble. And they recovered really well, and now are building. I think we’ll see in the next two weeks how well they’ve really tightened up the story, and how well that story is really going to work.”
Cody Rhodes’s Journey To WrestleMania Has Been “Awkward And Confusing”
Bischoff would continue talking about how awkward the Cody Rhodes WrestleMania story has been, but also showing interest in what WWE comes up with next.
“But I would agree that it’s — that bobble that took place a couple of weeks ago was confusing, or you could say dilutive. But for me, it was just awkward and confusing because nobody knew how to react. ‘Yay, it’s the Rock! But not like this. We want this, but we want the Rock!’ So that confusion and like, delayed emotive response as a result of it, is what I think that question is rooted in.”
“And I agree with it because I felt it too. But I’m interested in seeing what they do tonight [on Smackdown]. I’m interested in what we see next week. That will tell us just about everything we need to know.”
That was recorded before Smackdown. On Smackdown, The Rock and Roman Reigns confirmed that Rock is now part of The Bloodline while Cody Rhodes did not appear on the show.
As for what’s next for Cody Rhodes, he has a huge match on the February 19th edition of Raw against Drew McIntyre. Cody will also be heading to Perth, Australia as a guest on the Grayson Waller Effect talk show at Elimination Chamber with the World Heavyweight Champion Seth “Freakin” Rollins as the other guest.
