WWE’s Long Term Plan For Cody Rhodes Involves Roman Reigns
Even though they are no longer directly feuding, it is being reported that WWE is likely planning to get back to the Cody Rhodes-Roman Reigns rivalry.
The main event of WrestleMania 39 on April 2nd saw Roman Reigns defend the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Cody Rhodes in a match where many people believed Cody should have been the guy to “finish the story” and beat Reigns for the WWE & Universal Titles.
While it looked like Cody had Reigns beat and the titles within his grasp, Solo Sikoa attacked Cody from behind (while Paul Heyman distracted the referee) with a Samoan Spike, which led to a Spear from Reigns to keep his titles.
Since WrestleMania 39, Cody has had to deal with Brock Lesnar leading to their second match at Saturday’s WWE Night of Champions event. Cody is going into the match with a serious left arm injury (just a storyline) due to Lesnar’s vicious attack last Monday on Raw.
That match at WrestleMania 39 was also the last time Reigns defended the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship as he approaches an incredible 1,000 days as the Universal Champion. Now he is dealing with issues among The Bloodline since he’s disappointed in The Usos for losing the WWE Tag Team Titles and failing to get them back. Reigns & Sikoa will team up against Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Titles to try to bring the titles back to The Bloodline.
While Cody is a Raw guy and Roman is a Smackdown guy, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s Dave Meltzer reports that there is still a long term plan in WWE about going back to that match at some point in the future.
“As far as long-term goes, Reigns vs. Rhodes is the long-term direction for the ultimate destination match. WrestleMania is a strong possibility but this far out there are so many things that can happen.”
Perhaps this was mentioned because there was another report over the past week from WRKD Wrestling about how WWE was talking about a Cody Rhodes-GUNTHER match potentially at WrestleMania 40 next April in Philadelphia.
As noted by Meltzer, WrestleMania is obviously over ten months away, so there are a lot of things that can happen before that. It’s also possible that WWE could have Cody face Reigns before that at another show. It’s all just a rumor at this point.
