WWE Bringing Back Flag Match To Settle Heated Feud
National pride will be at stake as two WWE stars look to settle their issues in a flag match.
The history of flag matches reaches back decades in the world of professional wrestling. The idea of the bout is very simple: two flags sit opposite each other on the ring posts, and the winner of the bout is the first to capture their country’s flag.
WrestleMania 2 saw Corporal Kirchener defeat Nikolai Volkoff in a flag match that lasted just over two minutes. The match type was a staple of WWE live events in the late eighties and early nineties, where US heroes such as Jim Duggan and Lex Luger would defeat foreign villains such as Dino Bravo and Ludvig Borga.
At Badd Blood in 1997, Bret Hart and The British Bulldog combined to defeat The Patriot and Vader in a flag match as The Hart Foundation stoked tensions between Canada and the US to new heights. Now those fires have been stoked again in the form of Ethan Page and Tavion Heights.
Page left Heights draped in a Canadian flag after a recent attack. That came after Page had teamed with Canada’s first lady, Chelsea Green, to defeat the American pairing of Tavion Heights and Tyra Mae Steele at Heatwave.
Canada vs. USA In A WWE Flag Match
Now, on the September 9th edition of NXT, a flag match has been made between Tavion Heights and Ethan Page as they look to settle their differences and claim national pride.
That show will also see a major tag team match take place as Sol Ruca & Zaria, Fatal Influence, and The Culling will clash in a triple threat match with the winners becoming the number one contenders to the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship.
