WWE Star Breaks Silence On Mercedes Mone’s AEW Title Win

Mercedes Mone

A WWE star has tipped their hat to Mercedes Mone.

At AEW Double or Nothing 2024, Mercedes Mone and Willow Nightingale finally met in the ring, in a match that had been more than a year in the making.

Mone had spent 12 months out of action after suffering a broken ankle against Nightingale at NJPW STRONG Resurgence in May 2023. The match ended with Nightingale as the first-ever NJPW STRONG Women’s Champion — a title that ironically was created for Mone.

Fast forward to March 2024 and Mercedes Mone debuted with AEW and quickly looked to renew her rivalry with Nightingale. Ahead of Double or Nothing, the pair had gone back and forth for weeks, with the TBS Champion Nightingale smashing Mone through a table.

However, at Double or Nothing it was Mercedes Mone who emerged victorious winning her first championship in AEW in the process. Not that the match didn’t have a healthy dose of controversy along the way.

During the action, Stokley Hathaway and Kris Statlander inadvertently cost Nightingale the win, clashing with the referee while Mone was pinned to the mat. But things quickly got a whole lot worse for Nightingale after Mone scored the pin. As she headed up the ramp, she was initially consoled by Statlander who shoved Hathaway to the floor. Despite this, Statlander then ripped off a friendship bracelet and smashed Nightingale with a huge discus lariat.

One WWE Star Enjoyed Mercedes Mone’s Win

After the match, WWE star Naomi took to social media to give a nod to the new TBS Champion.

Naomi and Mone are long-time friends and held the WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles back in 2022. The pair famously walked out of a Monday Night Raw taping that May during their run as champions, and they subsequently left the company. While Mone then headed to NJPW and AEW, Naomi returned to WWE at the 2024 Royal Rumble.
