WWE Hall Of Famer Believes Goldberg Buried Gunther In Multiple Ways
Bill Goldberg’s comments after his match with Gunther have upset a WWE Hall of Famer.
The main event of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event in Atlanta saw Gunther retain the World Heavyweight Title by beating Bill Goldberg, who was competing in what many people believed was the Hall of Famer’s retirement match.
In the days that followed the match, Goldberg spoke about how upset he was with the match, partly because he only had about 25 seconds at the end of the broadcast to thank the fans before NBC ended the show at 10 p.m. ET. While WWE did post Goldberg’s speech on YouTube, that didn’t seem to make the legend happy.
While speaking about the match, Goldberg also said on The Ariel Helwani Show that he wanted to apologize for laughing when Gunther chopped him during the match. Most wrestlers sell Gunther’s chops and bump to the mat, yet Bill felt the need to laugh about it.
“I just really apologize. Number one, I clipped him once with a right hand and number two, man, I laughed when he chopped me, but I didn’t know what to expect. Because you feel these chops throughout your career a little bit and they’re loud, man.
Looks like they hurt, you look at the skin and it leaves some good marks and it’s devastating. It’s a great work punch, but I thought it was gonna hurt more, that’s all.”
As he continued, Goldberg made it clear that he didn’t mean to laugh at Gunther.
“It just startled me, and I didn’t mean to do that. I really apologize because I didn’t mean that. That’s not a rib. I’m not trying to downplay his move, but its just it caught me off guard and I completely broke character.”
Bubba Ray Dudley Feels Goldberg Buried Gunther With His Chop Mockery Comments
While speaking on his Busted Open Radio show, WWE Hall of Famer Bubba Ray Dudley (aka Bully Ray) expressed his disappointment with Goldberg for talking about the chops in the interview he did, which is Bubba’s way of saying that Bill buried Gunther by no-selling the chops and then talking about it after the match.
“Chops are something that have been prostituted in wrestling for a long time, right? We see guys and girls chop each other, where the talent doesn’t even register the impact from the blow.
But who has the most credible chop in all of pro wrestling right now? Gunther. Why the f**k would you say that? The guy with the most credible chop in all of wrestling, who’s in his prime, who you’re getting over, [you say] how his chop didn’t affect you? You laughed at it and said, ‘Oh, I thought it would hurt more.’
Why did you go out of your way to bury Gunther? But you know what? I don’t even know if he realizes he’s burying Gunther in protecting himself and his own character and ego.”
Bubba Ray went on to speak about how Goldberg revealed too much of his displeasure and should have just focused on not having time for his speech, rather than saying things that made Gunther look bad.
“If you felt slighted by the end of the show, where you didn’t get to say everything that you wanted to say, and there was only 30 seconds left, and that really bothered you, then tell me that’s what really bothered you. But you loved everything else.”
Even though Goldberg likely wrestled his last WWE match at Saturday Night’s Main Event, some people like AEW’s Jim Ross think there could be more matches in Goldberg’s career. Never say never in pro wrestling.
