WWE Banned Charlotte Flair From Referencing Ric Flair

WWE pushed back against Charlotte Flair’s family ties.

Charlotte Flair might be a huge name in her own right, but a mention of her famous father, Ric, is never far behind when discussing her greatness. But it seems WWE was initially hesitant to embrace Charlotte’s heritage.

While making an appearance on the Games with Names podcast, Flair was asked about finally using her famous family name after being billed as simply “Charlotte” during her time in NXT and initial run on the main roster.

“I wasn’t allowed to use the name ‘Flair’ or use my last name until after the match with Asuka at WrestleMania 34. I showed up at TV the next night and my boss at the time was like, ‘You can use the last name Flair now.’ I was like, ‘Oh, sweet’ (laughs).”

Flair later quipped, “I guess I had to earn it,” regarding getting her famous last name back. The former Women’s Champion added that, as well as not being able to use the Flair name, she was forbidden from using her father’s famous chops during matches or performing his “Woooo!” taunt on television.

Charlotte Flair Hated Famous Match

During the same interview, Charlotte Flair admitted she “hated” her WrestleMania 35 match against Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey. The bout is one of the most famous of her career, as it was the first time a women’s match had headlined WWE’s biggest event.

Flair said that while she didn’t like the match, Rousey loved it. The star also heavily praised Rousey for how quickly she picked up pro wrestling, claiming that a WrestleMania main event would have been impossible without her.
