WWE Abandoned Plans For New Title At WrestleMania 39
A new report has suggested WWE has scrapped potential plans to create a major new championship at WrestleMania 39.
For months – if not years – it had been rumoured that The Rock could be the one to come back to WWE and finally settle Roman Reigns’ claims about who sits at The Head of The Table once and for all. A major match between the two stars had been mooted for WrestleMania 39 as the event returns to Los Angeles, CA but that bout is now off the table.
Instead, 2023 Royal Rumble winner Cody Rhodes has been confirmed as Reigns’ challenger for the event should The Tribal Chief make it past the challenge of Sami Zayn at the Elimination Chamber.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that if The Rock was to be involved in WrestleMania, WWE would have likely created a whole new world championship that would almost have certainly have been won by Rhodes on the first night of WrestleMania:
“If it was Roman and The Rock, they were gonna create a championship on Saturday night that Cody probably would have ended up winning.
“It was Cody, Drew (McIntyre) or (Seth) Rollins that was gonna come out of that one. Because they wanna go back to two titles.”
Previous reports had suggested that Rhodes or Drew McIntyre could have faced off with Seth Rollins on night one of WrestleMania while The American Dream or The Rock was in line to face Roman Reigns. With The Rock’s involvement off the table, night two’s main event looks to be a straightforward match between the Royal Rumble winner and the champion.
On Monday Night Raw, Cody Rhodes furthered his involvement with Reigns as he came face-to-face with Paul Heyman, leaving the Special Counsel in tears.
