Wrestling Legend Explains What Was Wrong With CM Punk vs Gunther
CM Punk took down Gunther at SummerSlam 2025, but could not hold onto the World Heavyweight Championship.
Fans weren’t quite expecting The Best in the World to take down The Ring General, especially since it seems that Punk wants the Undisputed WWE Championship more than the World Heavyweight Championship.
However, the fandom does agree that Punk deserves another world championship run.
Bill Apter points out why CM Punk was “killed” during the match
While the match was power-packed, it might not have done the impactful job that everyone expected.
On Sportskeeda WrestleBinge’s SummerSlam Review, Bill Apter explained that he would have preferred to see some more back and forth than it being one-sided.
What I didn’t like was that CM Punk was killed during the whole match. The fans loved CM Punk, he let Gunther pretty much run the match. And I wanted to see more of a, you know CM Punk’s a fine wrestler. So is Gunther. And I wanted to see more of a pro-wrestling match, not so one-sided. I didn’t want to see it so one-sided.

Unfortunately for Punk, despite winning the match, he lost the title to Seth Rollins. The Visionary returned at SummerSlam, revealing that his injury was a big ruse. He cashed in the Money in the Bank contract and pinned Punk for the championship.
