Willow Nightingale Makes History To Win Title Vacated By WWE Star
Willow Nightingale has bounced back from her Owen Hart Cup disappointment.
It’s been a rough few months for Willow Nightingale after losing the TBS Title, being shoved to one side by her former friend Kris Statlander, and losing out in the finals of the Owen Hart Cup. However, if there’s one thing the AEW star will never do, it’s quit.
Fresh off the back of her Owen Hart Cup disappointment, Nightingale headed to NJPW-CMLL FantasticaMania in need of a boost, and she found one. At the show, the star overcame Lluvia and Viva Van to become CMLL Women’s World Champion.
In the process, Nightingale became the first American-born star to win the gold.
The championship had been vacated on July 10th after Stephanie Vaquer jumped from CMLL to WWE.
Willow Nightingale’s Spirit Was Broken
Speaking backstage after the match, Nightingale said her spirit was a bit broken after a series of recent setbacks in AEW, commenting she “really needed a win.”
“The last time I wrestled in CMLL was actually also my first week in CMLL, but do you want to know what happened when I showed up? I freaking won. I beat the current CMLL Champion at that point, Stephanie Vaquer. Stephanie’s not here; the championship’s vacant. Who’s going to step up? No one else but Willow Nightingale, duh!
My spirit was actually a little broken coming in here. AEW, my friend turned on me. I just lost my last match. I really needed a win, and today, I didn’t just get a win. I walked out an international champion.”
Nightingale’s most recent title reign ended at Double or Nothing where she lost the TBS Championship to Mercedes Mone.
