Update On William Regal Possibly Returning To WWE
William Regal is expected to return to WWE amid recent speculation that his run in AEW has ended.
It has been reported by multiple sources that William Regal is likely returning to WWE following what happened on AEW Dynamite last night. Regal’s AEW career began in March 2022.
On the November 30th edition of AEW Dynamite, Regal was in the ring with new AEW World Champion Maxwell Jacob Freidman (MJF). During the promo segment where MJF was his usual brash self, Regal unveiled a new-look a AEW World Title that had a burberry strap similar to the scarves that MJF wears. After a long speech by MJF, he turned on Regal by hitting him in the back. Regal was taken out on a stretcher and put in an ambulance with Bryan Danielson joining Regal, who is a mentor and father-figure to him.
MJF turned on Regal after using Regal to help him beat Jon Moxley for the AEW World Title at Full Gear on November 19th. It was MJF’s way of reminding us that he was “The Devil” while Regal was just a pawn in his game to become the AEW World Champion.
That angle with Regal was apparently the end of Regal’s run in AEW. It was reported by PWInsider’s Mike Johnson today that “William Regal, 54, will be World Wrestling Entertainment-bound shortly.” While nothing has been made official by WWE as of yet, there were rumblings about Regal working backstage in WWE again.
A report from Fightful Select notes that Regal’s AEW deal could be up this month while adding that there was definitely WWE interest in bringing Regal back to the company.
Regal’s WWE career started in the late 1990s after he became a household name wrestler as “Lord” Steven Regal in WCW. Regal was in and out of WWE a few times due to trips to rehab while having success as the Intercontinental Champion, European Champion and a King of the Ring winner. Regal was also the Commissioner during the Attitude Era.
After retiring as a wrestler in 2013, Regal worked behind the scenes for WWE developmental led by Triple H, who was running NXT. Regal beacme the on-air NXT General Manager. Behind the scenes, Regal was given the job title as the WWE Director of Talent Development and Head of Global Recruiting, which meant he had a big role in the company’s hiring process. Regal played a big role in the hiring and development of several of WWE’s biggest names in NXT history, many of whom are succeeding on the main WWE roster now.
In January 2022, Regal was released by the Vince McMahon-John Laurinaitis regime. A lot has changed in WWE this year and now that Triple H took over running WWE Creative and talent relations, bringing back Regal makes a lot of sense.
Since Regal has always been very close with Triple H going back to their time in WCW together nearly 30 years ago and many years in WWE, it is not a surprise that he may be WWE-bound again.
It should also be noted that Regal’s son works for WWE in NXT using the name of Charlie Dempsey although it has not been acknowledged on air that he is Regal’s son.
