“He Is Far Better Than Me At Our Job” – William Regal On Former AEW World Champion

William Regal on the ramp

William Regal has named a fellow performer as somebody that he believes was far better than him at his job as a professional wrestler.

In the early 1990s, William Regal became a well-known professional wrestler that was a talented in-ring performer that was in WCW using the name of “Lord” Steven Regal. It was an era featuring a lot of major stars, some of whom didn’t become top guys in WWE, but they would go on to become main event players in WWE like Steve Austin, Mick Foley and Paul “Triple H” Levesque.

Another guy that was in WCW at the same time as William Regal is Chris Jericho, who also didn’t become a main event level player in that company although he came close to it a few times. When he got to WWE in 1999, Jericho had his struggles, but two years later he was a World Champion that beat The Rock and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin at Vengeance 2001.

Since then, Jericho has gone on to become an eight-time World Champion in pro wrestling, including his current run as the ROH World Champion. At 52 years old, Jericho continues to perform as a professional wrestler at a high level and recently re-signed with AEW for at least three more years.

William Regal and Jericho also feuded about their WWE careers including in 2001 when they opened the historically-great WrestleMania 17 pay-per-view event. Most people can recall a famous moment in their rivalry when Jericho peed in Regal’s tea without Regal seeing it, which led to Regal drinking it and making an incredible face to sell it.

On a recent episode of his Gentleman Villain podcast, Regal praised Jericho’s incredible career as a pro wrestler.

“I can only be honest, I didn’t really think about it at the time. He was just another wrestler that came into my world, [I was] doing my job. And once he got to the WWE, and got himself over with the list of characters that were there at the time. I thought this lad is smart. And I won’t mention his name, but there is a certain person at one point that I said that I liked. And I said to Chris, can you teach him all the things that I won’t do? Because I would never do that.”

“Chris Jericho is a you know, he’s figured this show out. But he’s far better than I’ve ever been, because he’s obviously been, he’s a far bigger star than I’ve ever been, made far more money than I’ve ever made. And he knows how to keep himself in the top position, and I mean, he’s done things that are fantastic.”

“He left us what was he when he went to Mexico 22 or something? Yeah. And got himself in a big position and got yourself over. And then came to ECW and then got himself to WCW and then went to WWE and went to you know, AEW, and has become a top star for all those years. He is far better than me at our job, which is being a professional wrestler.”

As for Regal’s future, it was reported this week that Regal was leaving AEW to go back to WWE due to an out-clause in his contract.
