Will Ospreay Calls Current AEW Champion A Generational Talent

Will Ospreay

Will Ospreay believes the current AEW roster features a special wrestler he would call a generational talent.

There was an intense “Face to Face” segment on the final AEW Dynamite before All In featuring Will Ospreay and the AEW American Champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman aka MJF.

It was stated numerous times that there was going to be no physical contact between the two rivals, but MJF made it personal when he spoke about Ospreay’s wife and son. This led to Ospreay attacking MJF with punches, even though it led to a fine. MJF came back with a Dynamite Diamond Ring punch to the head that left Ospreay bloody.

After that segment in the ring, Ospreay was getting checked on by a trainer. Bryan Danielson walked in and told Ospreay: “Do it! I mean it. Do it!” It is believed that Bryan was telling Ospreay to use the Tiger Driver 91 move on MJF. Ospreay didn’t say anything, but he had a serious look on his face while contemplating what Bryan said. Since Ospreay “injured” Bryan during their AEW Dynasty match earlier this year, Ospreay has avoided using the Tiger Driver 91 again.

In an interview with Kenny McIntosh from Inside The Ropes, Ospreay spoke about MJF’s great talent as a pro wrestler but also criticized him for constantly wanting to prove doubters wrong.

“My main thing is I know who I am, but I still feel like he’s struggling to know who he is. I know he’s got all the accolades under the sun but it feels like he’s constantly trying to prove doubters wrong. The moment you do that you almost become like a cat with a piece of string. I could pull this piece of string forever and that cat is gonna keep chasing it, we’re just going to constantly move the goalposts.

So with that in mind, like you said, he’s a generational talent, the guy’s incredible on the microphone and showed it to everyone. He’s an incredible worker. But the main thing about it is that he’s without a doubt one of the best wrestlers in the world. But if anyone’s gonna look at that match and think that it’s a foregone conclusion that MJF is better than Will Ospreay, at the 59-minute mark I feel like he realised that he wasn’t exactly on my level, so he needed to do something cheap to secure the win.

So look, Max is one of the greatest and nothing but respect, in a weird way. But I think he’s constantly searching to try and prove doubters wrong, and that’s a slippery slope.”

Will Ospreay Thinks Recent AEW “Fight” Was Blown Out Of Proportion

One of the biggest AEW stories of the summer was a backstage altercation involving Britt Baker, Alicia Atout, and MJF. There were apparently comments made by Baker, which Atout relayed to her boyfriend MJF and whatever was said between Baker & MJF led to Baker getting suspended for one week.

According to Will Ospreay, that entire backstage “inside” was blown way out of proportion and it was not that big of a deal.

The full interview with Will Ospreay is in Issue 48 of Inside The Ropes Magazine, which will go on sale on August 29th and is available to pre-order here.
