Update On Why WWE Scrapped Major WrestleMania Match

WrestleMania 39 is on the horizon and the card for the two-night extravaganza is taking shape but much of the talk surrounding the event is about the matches not taking place.

Brock Lesnar will collide with the giant Omos at WrestleMania in Los Angeles, CA in a match that nobody saw coming. In the months leading up to the event there had been several reports suggesting names in the frame to face Lesnar on The Grandest Stage of Them All and one that WWE appeared to be leaning into at the Royal Rumble was Intercontinental Champion, Gunther.

Lesnar and Gunther had a stare-down during the men’s Rumble match that brought fans in the Alamodome to their feet but it appears plans for such a one-on-one contest were short-lived.

Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated has shed more light on WWE’s thinking on that match and says those in the company think Gunther needs another year before such a high-profile match:

“Gunther was another option for Lesnar, but the prevailing belief internally is that Gunther needs another year before conquering a star the caliber of Lesnar. After one more year of further establishing and cementing himself as a ring general, he and Lesnar could have a memorable encounter.”

Gunther looks to be on course to face Drew McIntyre, Sheamus, or possibly both men with his Intercontinental Championship on the line.
