Why WWE Champion Took Joy In Taking CM Punk’s GTS After A Big Match

CM Punk

A rising star on the WWE NXT brand has positive memories from when CM Punk dropped him with a GTS.

The October 1, 2024, edition of WWE NXT was a significant episode for the brand, as it marked their premiere on the CW Network. The NXT brand securing a network TV deal was an important milestone for the brand, which began as a WWE Network show before transitioning to USA Network and now airs on the CW Network in the US.

In the main event that night, CM Punk was the referee of a match that saw Trick Williams beat Ethan Page to win the NXT Title. It was one of those title changes that was obvious because Trick was a babyface at the time, so they wanted to have him take the title off the heel champion Page.

After the match, CM Punk argued with Ethan Page, who shoved Punk, prompting Punk to push back. Punk hit Page with the Go To Sleep, much to the delight of the fans.

During a recent episode of Insight With Chris Van Vliet, Page spoke about taking that GTS from Punk and why it made him smile, because it was a big moment for Trick.

“Let’s also talk about how that was the last thing people saw on that episode is confetti falling in my stupid face after CM Punk knocked me out in the middle of the ring.

You know what? There was some joy that I got out of it. It was the fact that Trick Williams won the championship. But the last thing people saw was my stupid face.”

CM Punk Reacts To John Cena’s Pipebomb Promo On SmackDown

The final ten minutes of WWE SmackDown on June 20th featured John Cena doing a “pipebomb” promo toward CM Punk, whom Cena hit with two belt shots to the head and an Attitude Adjustment through the table. Cena went on to recreate Punk’s infamous June 2011 “pipebomb” promo directed toward Cena.

Cena will defend the WWE Title against Punk at Night of Champions on June 28th. Punk was asked at the SummerSlam Kickoff show if he thought Cena’s promo made their feud more personal now. Punk didn’t see it that way.

“No, I don’t think so. Just because people come out on television and lie about me doesn’t make it true. John said one true real thing last night and that’s he’s jealous of me.

And it doesn’t seem to make any sense because he’s the greatest of all time, right? 17-time World Champion. I don’t know if anybody in this room is going to live long enough to see anybody else accomplish that. It could be Randy [Orton]. Randy is probably our best bet. One thing, the big difference between Randy and John is Randy didn’t sell his soul to The Rock.”

You can watch WWE Night of Champions when it streams live from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday, June 28, at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on Peacock in the United States and on Netflix everywhere else.
