Why The Undertaker vs. Sting Dream Match Never Happened In WWE
More light has been shed on why the dream match between The Undertaker and Sting never took place in WWE.
As the consciences of WWE and WCW, respectively, during the Monday Night Wars, fans had long dreamed of one day seeing The Undertaker and Sting mix it up in the ring.
While The Undertaker endured as a WWE Superstar for 30 years, Sting avoided the company until 2014, choosing instead to join TNA for several years after WCW shut its doors.
When The Icon arrived in WWE, fans were delighted as he was in time to face off with The Phenom, but that match never came to fruition. Instead, at WrestleMania 31, while The Undertaker defeated Bray Wyatt, Sting lost a nostalgia-filled stab at WCW’s past to Triple H.
Vince McMahon Avoided The Undertaker & Sting Showdown
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained that the reason The Undertaker and Sting never shared a ring in WWE together all came down to the wishes of former boss, Vince McMahon:
That’s a Vince call. And in hindsight, I guess the answer is no. He never saw the big thing in it that a lot of people did. He could have done it. Many people would have wanted him to do it. I don’t think he saw Sting at the level of Undertaker. And he didn’t do it.
Sting’s time in WWE came crashing to an end after an ill-fated match with Seth Rollins sent him into a brief retirement. The WWE Hall of Famer resurfaced in AEW, enjoying a memorable run in Tony Khan’s company that ended in 2024 when he finally called time on his own in-ring career.
The Stinger’s legacy is living on, however, as his son recently made his own debut for AEW.
