Why Sami Zayn Is Away From WWE

An update has been provided about why Sami Zayn has been away from WWE since the Elimination Chamber PLE.

There was another chapter written in the on-again off-again rivalry between former best friends Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn at WWE Elimination Chamber.

The two Canadians had a vicious battle in an Unsanctioned Match. The reason it was built up as an Unsanctioned Match is because Owens attacked Zayn with a brutal Package Piledriver, which injured Zayn in the storyline with a serious neck injury. Raw GM Adam Pearce told Zayn he could only have a match with Owens if it was Unsactioned and Zayn agreed.

Owens and Zayn would go on to have an incredible match that is likely an early contender for WWE Match of the Year in front of a raucous Toronto crowd. Owens got the win after multiple Powerbombs on the apron. After the match, Owens wanted to do more damage on the exposed concrete, but Randy Orton made the save after Owens injured him several months earlier.

Since Elimination Chamber, Sami Zayn has been off WWE television with the company saying he was “out indefinitely” to explain the storyline.

Sami Zayn Requested Time Off By WWE

For the past several years, Zayn has been one of the most featured superstars in all of WWE and he has also headlined major shows like WrestleMania, Elimination Chamber, and Survivor Series in the past.

When asked why Zayn is off WWE TV, Fightful Select’s Sean Ross Sapp reported that Zayn had requested time off. Sapp isn’t sure if that is because Zayn is observing Ramadan, but that is also taking place this month. Due to WWE being overseas a lot this month, that could play a factor in Zayn wanting to be home for Ramadan.

Zayn has a wife and young son, both of whom have been shown on WWE TV before, including during the Owens/Zayn rivalry when Owens filmed Zayn at home with his family.
