Why John Cena Shouldn’t Retire From WWE

A wrestling legend who worked a lot with John Cena in WWE doesn’t like the idea of a retirement.

The impending retirement of 16-time World Champion John Cena from WWE is likely going to be one of the biggest stories in 2025. Cena has announced that 2025 will be the last year where he competes in the WWE ring as a wrestler and those final matches are going to come in December 2025.

Considering that Cena’s WWE career started on television in 2002, it’s an impressive run to go 23 years as an in-ring performer. While Cena has cut back as a wrestler since 2019 and focused his time on his acting career, he is still one of the biggest names in WWE history.

Since Cena’s retirement announcement, many wrestlers in WWE have made it clear they want to have at least one more match with Cena, or in some cases, they want a match with him because it hasn’t happened yet.

Jerry “The King” Lawler is a WWE Hall of Famer who was an announcer during a majority of Cena’s run. Lawler called dozens of huge Cena matches on the biggest stages of them all, so he knows a lot about the kind of person that Cena is.

In an interview with Sportskeeda WrestleBinge talking about Cena’s retirement, Lawler disagreed with Cena wanting to retire

“I don’t think anybody should ever retire. There’s too many things that you can do without ever using the word ‘retire.’ I use that when I hear about somebody retiring, I look for them to die pretty soon. I would never say that he’s going to retire.”

Lawler would go on to talk about how the late, great Terry Funk never retired even though Funk had plenty of retirement matches. Lawler, like Funk, has even wrestled in his 70s.

John Cena Plans To Be Involved With WWE After In-Ring Retirement

Even though he doesn’t plan to wrestle again past 2025, John Cena has made it clear he will remain a part of WWE for many more years.

“I have such a trustworthy relationship with them. Over two decades. I am a champion of the brand. I love the company. It is my home. They are my family. Even after 2025, I’ve already signed an extension to remain a member of the WWE family for the near, mid, and long-term future. I don’t think there will be a beat of my heart where WWE blood doesn’t come out of it.”

The next time John Cena appears on WWE television isn’t known yet, but Cena has said he will be at the Netflix premiere on Raw, which is on January 6th.
