Why John Cena May Never Wrestle Roman Reigns Again
John Cena and Roman Reigns have not wrestled each other since 2021.
The Franchise Player is halfway through his retirement tour. He currently holds the Undisputed WWE Championship, which he successfully defended against CM Punk last Saturday at Night of Champions in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, The OTC has been absent since he was taken out by Seth Rollins and his associates on RAW after WrestleMania 41.
In a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet on INSIGHT, WWE analyst Sam Roberts discussed the possibility of Cena and Reigns going head-to-head one last time before the 17-time world champion hangs up his boots by the end of this year.
The 41-year-old disclosed that although he hopes the two massive stars clash in the coming months, he pointed out that both Cena and Reigns’ limited schedules could be an obstacle to it happening. He emphasized that Reigns’ priority upon his WWE comeback would be to go after Rollins and his crew, who laid him out.
I would like to think so, but I’m not sure that we’re gonna get a Roman match, to tell you the truth. Do I want it? Yeah, I really want to see a Roman match. I think the idea of Roman coming back, I think there’s such a wonderful story to tell, because when John and Roman had that match, that was the passing of the torch match.
John Cena made it very difficult for Roman Reigns. ‘You need to learn to cut a promo kid.’ You know what I mean? He made it really tough for him. And the idea that this Roman Reigns could come back and go, ‘Okay, John, guess what I learned how to do?’ This is the Roman Reigns that John has to deal with, I think would be an incredible story.
I just don’t 100% know where it fits in. I think it could. I just don’t know where it fits into the timeline with the fact that Roman, his priority number one would be where he left, which is getting laid out by Seth Rollins and Bron Breakker. [H/T: INSIGHT With Chris Van Vliet]
When Is Roman Reigns Returning To WWE?
Roman Reigns has been absent from television since April. However, recent reports suggested his return could happen sooner than later.
The OTC, who is advertised for SummerSlam, will make his comeback this month, according to WrestleVotes, to set up a match heading into the premium live event.
It seems that time of year again—Roman Reigns’ return is on the horizon. Sources indicate his name has popped up internally in recent weeks, typically signaling the wheels are in motion for a return heading into the biggest party of the summer.
