Why Gunther Shouldn’t Retire Another WWE Legend At WrestleMania
This WWE analyst thinks it wouldn’t be wise for Gunther to retire more WWE legends.
The recent decision made by WWE, which saw Gunther win against John Cena in the latter’s final wrestling match, by making him tap out, has been polarising and controversial to say the least. The WWE universe has been heavily divided on the decision, with some fans and critics feeling that it was a bad idea to destroy Cena’s decades-long mantra of “never give up”, while others believed it was the right thing to do.
Gunther has also retired Goldberg recently, and after appearing backstage on Raw, the night after the match with Cena, it was hinted that AJ Styles could be next on the list of wrestlers that Gunther could retire.
Soon enough, Brock Lesnar’s name was also thrown into the mix. Many feel that Gunther, being someone who simply “retires” wrestlers, doesn’t make sense for his growth. One such figure was WWE social media analyst Sam Roberts.
Sam Roberts Thinks It’s Not Yet Time For WWE to book Gunther Vs. Lesnar
Speculating about some possible match bookings for Gunther, Sam Roberts said on his show Notsam Wrestling that it would be a bad idea for Gunther to keep retiring wrestlers who are already on their way out. Hence, a match with Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania wouldn’t help him. He also feels that Gunther should probably face someone like Ilja Dragunov and be part of the “main show” instead, where he can get some credibility rather than if WWE were to have him do the safe thing of retiring more legends.
I think you could do Gunther vs Brock Lesnar, but like this quick? Like, Brock is still a pretty cemented heel. Gunther is the biggest heel that you’ve got, I mean, unless you’re.. when are you gonna turn Brock babyface and why? And if you’re gonna turn Brock babyface, don’t you need a story to go along with Brock turning babyface? You can turn Brock babyface against Gunther. Like are you gonna have Gunther beating down somebody, and Brock comes in and makes the save?
Look I’m never gonna be mad at Gunther vs Brock, but I dunno man, I kind of.. it feels safe. Having Gunther do another retirement match at Wrestlemania feels very safe and doesn’t feel like you’re shifting things.
There are two ways to do Gunther. He’s almost a side show to the main show. Or he takes over the main show. And you could do it either way. But if you’re asking me what would be a huge match for Gunther at Wrestlemania? It’ll be a match that puts Gunther on the main show. It would be a match that makes you realise that Gunther is not just here to retire people that are leaving anyway. That Gunther is truly disruptive. If Gunther is truly disruptive, he has to fight guys that aren’t retiring. (48:46 onwards)
