Why Gunther Was “Indefinitely Suspended” By WWE

WWE suspended the former World Heavyweight Champion Gunther, and now there’s a backstage report about why it happened.

The opening match at WrestleMania 41 saw Jey Uso beat Gunther to become the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Jey gave the former champion a taste of his own medicine because Jey won the match with a sleeper hold that Gunther has used to win many matches in his career.

There was a shocking moment on the Raw After WrestleMania in Las Vegas when Gunther showed up at ringside to berate the announcers Michael Cole & Pat McAfee. Things turned physical when Gunther attempted to choke out Cole with a sleeper hold.

Seeing that his friend was in trouble, Pat McAfee came to Cole’s aid by punching Gunther. That angered the former World Champion, so Gunther put McAfee in a sleeper and held onto it for nearly two minutes before help arrived for McAfee.

Raw’s General Manager, Adam Pearce, announced on social media that the powerful Austrian was suspended.

“Good afternoon. By now everybody has seen what happened on Monday between Gunther, Michael Cole and Pat McAfee. First things first, Pat and Cole are okay. Pat is in Green Bay covering the NFL Draft and Cole’s doing what he always does – preparing for Monday Night Raw in a Hall of Fame way.

As for you, Gunther, your actions were reprehensible and disgusting. You will never again put your hands on a member of my announce team because there ain’t no heat in beating up an announcer. You’re frustrated because you lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Jey Uso and I get that, but if you want to blame somebody, then park yourself in front of a mirror and ask the person staring back at you.

After conferring with the representation of all three men, Gunther has been fined an undisclosed amount and suspended indefinitely.

Pat and Cole will be on Raw this Monday live in Kansas City, 8 eastern, 5 pacific on Netflix. Thank you for your time.”

Gunther Requested Time Off From WWE

Over the past three years, Gunther held the World Heavyweight Championship for 258 days, following his record-breaking 666-day reign as the Intercontinental Champion. During his World Title reign, he also wrestled at many WWE live events in Europe in March.

Cory Hayes reported on X/Twitter that Gunther requested time off from WWE, which is why the angle was done to suspend him.

There’s no word on when Gunther may return to WWE TV, but he has a wife and young son, so he’ll likely enjoy his time away from the job.
