Why CM Punk Has To Turn Heel On John Cena After WWE SmackDown
CM Punk’s humiliation by John Cena on SmackDown was of the highest order.
Not only did the Undisputed WWE Champion put Punk through the table, but he also delivered his own ‘pipebomb’.
Fans inside the Van Andel Arena in Michigan and viewers worldwide got flashes of Punk’s 2011 pipebomb, this time with the characters swapped in real-time.
Cena faced R-Truth in the main event. The match only lasted a few minutes before Cena took Truth out by hitting him with the championship belt.
Punk then made his way to the ringside, but Cena neutralized the threat by hitting him with the belt twice and putting him through the table.
He spent the next ten minutes obliterating Punk on the mic, at one point calling him Mr. TKO. The pair will face off for the title at Night of Champions on June 28.
WWE Veteran Calls For CM Punk’s Heel Turn
A video of CM Punk surfaced online showing him looking defeated in the ring after Cena’s attack.
Former WWE writer Vince Russo spoke about the segment on Sportskeeda Wrestling’s BroDown podcast.
He said Cena ‘absolutely obliterated’ Punk before their big match in Riyadh on Saturday.
Russo then added that this was the ideal time for WWE to transition Punk into a heel, as there was no coming back for him in this situation as a babyface.
He’s speaking the truth. So if I am Cena, I know I am speaking the truth. If I am freaking Punk lying there, I know he’s spitting the truth too. At some point, you gotta get up and shut him the F up… I don’t know how CM Punk comes back from that other than to turn heel on John Cena. [15:58 onwards]
