Why AJ Styles Thinks Retirement Will Suck
Although he doesn’t want to, AJ Styles knows it’s time to retire in 2026.
In the lead-up to WWE’s two-date stop in Japan, AJ Styles announced that it would likely be his last time wrestling in the country before he retires. During that same interview, Styles said he plans to retire in 2026 after one more match at WrestleMania.
After wrapping up his in-ring career, Styles said that he’d like to work as a coach or producer backstage.
Although he noted that he hasn’t got a specific date in mind, Styles was adamant that he won’t compete beyond the end of 2026.
AJ Styles Determined To Retire On His Own Terms
In a new interview with Justin Barrasso for Undisputed, Styles looked ahead to retirement and admitted that he’s not especially looking forward to it. However, he’s determined to stick to the plan.
“I’ve had a tremendous time in professional wrestling. Not many people can say they love their job. I do. It’s going to suck when it’s over. But that’s always been my ultimate goal — to retire on my own terms.”
Styles went on to explain why he felt his time with NJPW before signing with WWE helped him find his place with the sports entertainment giant.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that I may not have made it to WWE without Japan. My tenure in Japan helped me figure out who I was and what I wanted to do.
When I went to WWE, Vince wanted me to be who I was in Japan. That style from Japan did not change when I went to WWE. That’s the guy Vince wanted, so I didn’t have to change anything. Maybe that’s why it got over so well.”
During a recent interview, Drew McIntyre revealed that he almost signed with NJPW in 2017 before re-joining WWE. McIntyre explained that he was ready to head to Japan before William Regal urged him to speak with Triple H.
