What Are WWE’s Current Plans For John Cena Title Reign?
A new report suggests how long John Cena’s Undisputed WWE Title reign may last.
The main event of WWE Backlash saw John Cena successfully defend the Undisputed WWE Title against Randy Orton, perhaps the most significant rival of Cena’s career.
Cena’s match with Orton was billed as “One Last Time” because Cena plans to retire as a wrestler in 2025, so this could have been the last time he faces Orton in a match.
It was a controversial match because Orton looked like he had the match won a few times, including after hitting his patented RKO finisher, but the referee was bumped and Orton wasn’t able to win the match.
At one point, R-Truth even went down to the ring to try to save his “childhood hero” Cena, so Orton also dropped Truth with an RKO. After Orton did that, Cena hit Orton with a low blow and a WWE Title shot to the head. The referee Chad Patton, who didn’t see Cena’s illegal moves, counted the dramatic pinfall to give Cena the win.
Fightful Select reports that Cena’s WWE Title reign is expected to continue into the summer, but there was no specific time for when Cena might lose his title.
During his heel promos as the WWE Champion, Cena stated that he would retire as the “Last Real Champion” in WWE and force the company to create a new title after he’s done at the end of this year.
John Cena Likely To Compete Near His Hometown In Final WWE Match
After Backlash ended, R-Truth confronted John Cena during the post-show press conference. That was a mistake because an angry Cena picked up Truth and gave him an Attitude Adjustment through a table.
It has also been reported by the Boston, Massachusetts news station WCVB that John Cena’s final match is likely going to be in Boston in December. Reporter Shayna Seymour stated:
“John Cena’s last match is scheduled for December at the TD Garden in Boston.”
Cory Hays of PW Nexus has reported that a Saturday Night’s Main Event is planned for Boston’s TD Garden on December 13. Cena grew up in West Newbury, Massachusetts, so Boston is close to his hometown, and it’s an arena where Cena has competed many times over the last 20+ years.
There is also some information about when Cena’s next match might be. Cory Hays also reported that Cena may face R-Truth at Saturday Night’s Main Event on May 23rd. It’s not known if that would be a WWE Title match since Truth rarely wins in WWE, so it could be a non-title match.
Meanwhile, CM Punk issued a warning of sorts toward Cena following his controversial Backlash win.
