What Happened When Ex-WWE Star Returned After 2 Years Away
A former WWE star was back in the company for the first time in two years as they challenged for championship gold.
TNA stars recently invaded NXT as the unhappiness on their roster with WWE reached a boiling point. The tipping point came after the winner-take-all match between NXT Champion Oba Femi and TNA Champion Trick Williams was called off after Williams got physical with Mike Santana.
That led to a Showdown taking place where NXT stars went up against their TNA counterparts. The Hardys made history on that show, where Survivor Series-style tag team matches also took place.
A big title match, two years in the making, also finally took place as a current TNA star got what was a long time coming to them.
Mustafa Ali Fails In WWE Title Quest
On the September 30th edition of NXT, former WWE star Mustafa Ali returned to the company to interrupt NXT North American Champion Ethan Page. Ali reminded everyone that he was set to get a shot at that title, but his match was scrapped when he was released from his contract:
It wasn’t that long ago that I earned an opportunity at the North American Championship, but that opportunity never came, and I started to wonder, maybe I’m cursed, but on this very day two years ago, I was promised a North American Championship match, but on that day the sun did not rise.
Instead of a title match, I got a phone call. A phone call that my services were no longer needed. And here we are, 749 days later and I still am waiting for the championship match that I earned!
At NXT Showdown, Mustafa Ali was unable to rewrite the history books as he lost to Ethan Page, with the Canadian star retaining his title.
