Wes Lee Wins First Singles Title In NXT
Wes Lee can call himself a singles champion in NXT after winning the North American Title at Halloween Havoc.
The NXT North American Championship was vacated several weeks ago when Shawn Michaels told the former champion Solo Sikoa that he had to give up the title since Solo is on Smackdown now.
To crown a new champion, NXT’s decision makers decided to do a 5-man Ladder Match to crown a new North American Champion. The former two-time NXT North American Champion Carmelo Hayes was placed into the match while Wes Lee, Nathan Frazer, Oro Mensah and Von Wagner all won matches to crown a new champion.
It was a smart choice to start Halloween Havoc with the Ladder Match because it was such an exciting match in front of a hot crowd. There were several moments in the match where different people looked like they might win.
The end of the match saw Lee facing off with Hayes on a ladder that also had a bridged ladder beside them. Lee would end up doing a double knee attack onto Hayes, who bumped into the ladder bridge. That allowed Lee the opportunity to climb and retrieve the North American Title to win the match.
Lee was a former NXT Tag Team Champion as part of the MSK team, so it’s his second championship win in NXT.
NXT’s Instagram account posted this video of Lee getting a congratulatory hug from WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels, who is the man that runs NXT these days.
Congratulations to Wes Lee on his first singles title in NXT.
