Vince Russo Believes His WCW World Title Reign Was Justified

Vince Russo shed light on his controversial decision to book himself as the WCW World Champion.

In an interview on Truth With Consequences, according to Vince Russo, this move was not a spur-of-the-moment decision, but rather a calculated strategy to attract a wider audience to the show. The decision was made during a creative meeting just days before the event, to generate maximum viewership.

Russo emphasised that the approach taken by the creative team was different from the traditional wrestling mindset. Instead of catering solely to hardcore wrestling fans, they aimed to create a TV show that would captivate both the die-hard fans and the casual viewers. This philosophy led Russo to make similar bold decisions in the past, such as putting the WWE title on Vince McMahon, the WCW title on David Arquette, and another WCW title on Eric Bischoff.

The week of the show in the creative meeting the decision was made. The people in the booking meeting all thought the same. The goal was to get as many eyeballs as possible on the show. Everybody on the creative side was looking at it as a TV show rather than a wrestling show. I put the WWE title on [Vince] McMahon, the WCW title on [David] Arquette, and another WCW title on [Eric] Bischoff. Why? We are looking to create stories not for the wrestling fan but for the casual wrestling fan.

Will Vince Russo Return To WWE?

There has been no current speculation between either party that Russo will return to WWE. However, according to Vince Russo, he had a conversation with Vince McMahon in 2022 about Russo’s possible return to WWE but negotiations broke down after McMahon wanted Russo to prove his worth which Russo feels like he already has done.
