Vince McMahon’s “Proud Gay American” Pitch To Ex-WWE Star Revealed
Vince McMahon’s seemingly crazy pitch to this former WWE star left him bewildered.
McMahon has been responsible for some legendary WWE programming. His work in the Attitude Era and Ruthless Aggression Era, both as a company owner and in-ring performer (The Mr.McMahon character), is widely regarded as some of the best in wrestling history.
However, not all of his ideas were gold, and some things he has done go far beyond the territory of what can be called “normal”. Former WWE Superstar Steven Richards recently shared one such wacky idea that Vince McMahon had.
Richards, who is best known for his work with the stable Right To Censor in the Attitude Era, recalls a shocking demand he had gotten from McMahon where the latter pressed him to come out as a “proud gay American” on live television.
Steven Richards Decided To Leave WWE After This Pitch From Vince McMahon
Speaking to James Romero on his podcast The Stevie Richards Show, Richards revealed a confusing and bewildering confrontation he had with Vince McMahon and his team of “Yes Men”. When Romero asks him what his craziest Vince McMahon story is, he shares an anecdote about the time Vince asked him to wear makeup and declare himself a “Proud Gay American.”
Probably the craziest Vince McMahon story that I had to deal with personally, that day, Vince comes up to m,e and they’re all surrounding me, the yes men, in a semi or full circle, and I’m like, what is going on here? I thought I was gonna get jumped or rolled on.
I’m standing there, and he tells me the way the match is gonna go, what the result..we’ll get to that.
But the craziest part to me was “wear these,” and he pulls granny panties out of his suit jacket pocket. And I’m just looking at them like “What are you doing with those?”
He’s like, “You’re wearing these.”
He goes, “You’re going to lose tonight, and you’re going to go on Monday Night Raw tomorrow. You’re gonna be sitting in one of the rooms backstage, you’re gonna have a dress on, a wig on, rouge makeup on, you’re gonna have a big feathered boa on, You’re gonna announce to the entire world that you’re a proud gay American.
I said “But I’m not gay.” And he goes,”You’re a proud gay American.” (0:44 onwards)
Richards goes on to mimic McMahon’s animated action of a cut-throat taunt to him backstage when he refused to do it and decided that it was time for him to go.
