Vince McMahon Gave Ex-WWE Announcer Bizarre Advice

Vince McMahon WWE

A former WWE announcer has recalled a time when Vince McMahon told him to do something strange while on commentary.

When Vince McMahon was running WWE with an iron fist for over 40 years as the Chairman of the company, it was well known that he was very strict with everybody who worked for him.

There have been many stories from people about how Vince McMahon would order talent to do things that they didn’t want to do, but they were helpless because it was their job.

The role of a wrestling announcer is to get stories across so in Vince’s WWE world, they were doing what Vince wanted them to do.

Todd Grisham worked for WWE from 2004 to 2011 as a play-by-play announcer on various shows, a backstage interviewer, and a host, among other things.

Vince McMahon Did Not Want Enthusiasm For Christian WWE’s Return

On Twitter/X, Todd Grisham quote tweeted a comment from wrestling podcaster Jason Solomon (aka Solomonster), who was complaining about the baseball commentating skills of Bob Costas. Solomon compared it to when Christian returned to WWE in February 2009 on ECW TV and Grisham barely showed any enthusiasm. According to Grisham, it was a direct order from McMahon.

Right before I walked out of the Gorillia position before the show. Vince McMahon called me over and said “When Christian walks out..don’t get excited at all simply say‘it’s Christian’ and that’s it. Understand me?” Me: “Yes sir”

At the time, Christian had come back to WWE after a successful three-year run in TNA Wrestling when he used the name Christian Cage. The reason Christian left for TNA in the first place is because he was frustrated in his role in WWE, so when his contract came up, he went to TNA instead of staying with WWE.

When Christian came back to WWE in 2009, it was after he had success as a former Tag Team Champion, Intercontinental Champion, and one of the guys credited for making Tag Team Ladder Match and TLC Matches famous. However, for whatever reason, Vince McMahon felt like Christian’s return didn’t require an exciting reaction from ECW’s announcer Todd Grisham.

A clip of Christian’s return can be seen below.
