Video Resurfaces Of Vince McMahon Reacting To NWA-TNA Launch

Vince McMahon WWE Doc

Video showing Vince McMahon’s initial reaction to the formation of NWA-TNA has been uncovered.

With WWE lacking major competition following it’s 2001 purchase of main rivals World Championship Wrestling, legendary Father and Son duo Jeff and Jerry Jarrett formed NWA-TNA after an idea that came to fruition on a fishing trip with friend Bob Ryder.

The trio opted to run a unique pay-per-view only model and launched the company with it’s inaugural show on 19th June 2022. The likes of Scott Hall, Konnan and Rick Steiner all appeared on a card that was headlined by Ken Shamrock defeating Malice to lift the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.

Vince McMahon’s initial reaction to the new promotion had not been widely known until a recent clip emerged on social media of a June 2002 appearance by McMahon on WWE Byte This.

The former WWE Chairman revealed his scepticism about the weekly pay-per-view format:

“I don’t have any views on it because I haven’t seen it yet. Again, I think it’s unusual. It’s a very unusual approach, a very novel approach, but I don’t know how you promote that when they have no promotional vehicle.

So if they are fine, but don’t know how you promote without some sort of platform to promote. If you are simply promoting to that narrow casted pay-per-view audience that’s difficult to do.

So again, it’s a 2 hour show and people are expected to pay $9.95 for it. You can watch, hopefully, I dare say, comparing the production value and the calibre of talent and everything of their show to one of ours. I don’t know this, I am anxious to see like everybody else, but it’s difficult to ask a consumer to pay $9.95 for a 2 hour show when you can see one on Monday night and you can see one on Thursday night.

So I don’t know, unless they are so unique in their format or something that you can’t see on Monday or Thursday, which it may be. Again, none of us have seen it, they haven’t had their first show yet. It’s a very novel approach, let me say that.”
