Vince McMahon Tried To Re-Sign WWE Veteran For Free
A former WWE name has claimed that Vince McMahon tried to lure them back to the company without paying them a dime.
Vince McMahon was once the creative genius who led WWE to unprecedented global success thanks to superstars such as Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin, and John Cena.
However, by the dying days of his time in charge, McMahon had long stopped being a creative powerhouse. So much so that, apparently, in 2017, he was close to making a major decision that would have polarised the fanbase of WWE more than ever. Vince McMahon was going to bring back Vince Russo.
Vince McMahon Wanted Vince Russo For Nothing
At least that is what the former WWE and WCW writer claimed during an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show. Russo detailed that the last time he spoke to McMahon was when the former WWE chairman was thinking about bringing him back to the company:
When was the last time I spoke to Vince McMahon? The last time we had an email exchange was probably eight years ago — and it didn’t go too well. It was about… he was entertaining the idea of bringing me back because the numbers were going down again. He kinda wanted me to audition for the job, and I’m like, ‘Vince, I think you know what I can do. I’m not jumping through hoops. You can continue going down the road you’re going down.’
However, McMahon wanted Russo to watch and offer his feedback on the WWE product for free and that was something that Russo just wasn’t going to do:
Yeah — before all the stuff went down, probably about eight years ago or so. Would I have considered it? Yes. He wanted me to watch the shows for a month and give him my feedback. I came back like, ‘Okay, no problem — what are you paying me for that month?’ And he hit me with, ‘Pay you? You should be thrilled to have this kind of opportunity.’ I’m like, ‘Vince, I’m not a kid out of college. I’m not working for free. I’m not watching the shows. If you’re compensating me, no problem — but the days of me doing anything for free are long gone.’
I’ll be honest, he got very nasty with me — and the last email was really nasty. He was hitting me below the belt, and I didn’t even answer it. Yeah, personal insults.
