Vince McMahon is back in WWE in some capacity, but he’s apparently not going to be working out of the company’s corporate offices.
It’s been a wild start to 2023 for WWE with the news that Vince McMahon is back in WWE…sort of. While the former WWE Chairman and CEO is back on the Board of Directors, the main reason for his return is to try to find the best deal for WWE to be sold ahead of their next TV deal expiring in October 2024. Since that deal was to be negotiated in the first half of 2023, Vince is back now to try to sell the company.
The following statement was released by WWE Chairwoman & Co-CEO Stephanie McMahon, Co-CEO Nick Khan and Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque:
“Today, we announce that the founder of WWE, Vince McMahon, will be returning to the Board. We also welcome back Michelle Wilson and George Barrios to our Board of Directors. Together, we look forward to exploring all strategic alternatives to maximize shareholder value.”
Their statement also made it clear, just like Vince’s statement said, that he was there to sell the company and not necessarily run the creative side as he did in the past.
As Vince McMahon stated yesterday, “WWE has an exceptional management team in place, and I do not intend for my return to have any impact on their roles, duties, or responsibilities.”
In a follow-up to that, Vince McMahon was not present at the WWE Smackdown tapings in Memphis last Friday, nor was he at WWE Headquarters.
On Wrestling Observer Radio that aired on Friday, Dave Meltzer noted that Vince isn’t likely going to return to his office at WWE.
“Now he’s back. It’s business as usual. He hasn’t returned to his office. He’s not in Memphis tonight for the wrestling. I mean, the word is he’s not [not returning to TV]. The word is he’s not even returning to his office. I mean, we’ll see how long that lasts.”
As is always the case for something like this, it could change down the road, but for now, it’s expected that Vince McMahon won’t be working out of WWE’s head office.
