Why Vince McMahon Really Disliked Ex-WWE World Champion
Vince McMahon had a ridiculous idea to censor a former WWE Champion.
Christian signed with WWE in 1998 and became one-half of one of the biggest tag teams in history alongside Edge. However, while his partner was pegged for superstardom as a singles wrestler for several years, Christian faced more of a battle.
The star left the company in 2005 after becoming stuck in the mid-card, before going on to find success in TNA. He then returned to WWE and eventually became World Champion, but he was still never presented as a major star.
After making a surprise return to action at the 2021 Royal Rumble years after feeling his career was over, Christian headed to AEW. Since then, he’s enjoyed the Indian Summer his career deserves, and he’s set to challenge for the World Title at Worlds End.
Vince McMahon Had No Love For Christian
Despite employing Christian on more than one occasion, it’s become an open secret that Vince McMahon didn’t think much of the star and regularly tried to embarrass him.
During a recent episode of his Grilling JR podcast, Jim Ross was asked about Christian and why McMahon didn’t like him. The WWE Hall of Famer said a lot of McMahon’s annoyance came down to the star’s physique.
“I thought it was kind of absurd because Christian deserved more time,” Ross said. “He could help us, he could work with these guys that were less talented than him and make them look good. I think Vince’s issue with Christian was Christian’s physique, he’s not a big guy, you know? He’s always in great shape. but he’s not a big guy, and Vince has these hard-ons for big guys, big teams more often than not.”
Ross went on to confirm claims from a former WWE writer that McMahon wanted to put a blue dot over Christian’s face when he was on-screen. The commentator said the idea was “stupid,” but just something his boss got into his head.
“Yeah, it’s real, it’s stupid. How do you take — how do you record that?” Ross asked. “He’s going to be moving, can you move the blue dot, keep it over your face? I don’t think so. It was just something Vince thought of.”
It was recently reported that WWE blocked Christian Cage’s attempts to trademark the phrase “Captain Charisma.” The star regularly used the nickname during his multiple spells with the company.
